Getting one worked out well for us and may well be a good idea for you too. However, and this may seem obvious, it is a very bad idea to jump on one of these things if don’t know how to ride. “Duh” you say but people do this in vast numbers every day. I did this myself once upon a time. I foolishly rented an automatic scooter in Thailand having no real idea of how to ride. My only previous experience with two wheeled motorized transport was when I rented an automatic scooter in Bali… It’s only through a mixture of my cautious temperament and sheer dumb luck that I have never had a serious accident.

 

I have however seen plenty of others have accidents. I once saw a guy on a scooter get airborne (briefly) after he was clipped by a car. I’ve seen a woman holding a baby get launched off a bike. This is a dangerous activity.

 

Given how dangerous it is you should absolutely take every step possible to ensure that you know what you’re doing. That means getting your motorcycle license.

 

You may not even legally need a motorcycle license to ride a scooter, particularly a fully automatic scooter. That’s not the point. The point is to get some proper instruction, to practice emergency stopping in a controlled environment and to be able to operate the machine without thinking consciously thinking about it.

 

In fact, a motorcycle license is likely to somewhat over qualify you to ride the small capacity bikes common in south East Asia. A motorcycle like those common in Australia, the US etc requires you to use the clutch, a gear shifter, the accelerator and not one but two separate brakes. By comparison a postie bike like the one we purchased has no clutch. An automatic scooter has no clutch and no gear shifter.

Before you head to south East Asia to teach English, on your sabbatical, to work on your Internet startup or whatever else you’re doing go and get your motorcycle license. Yes it costs money but it’s not extortionate. It’s a skill that will be with you forever and the training you receive may one day save your life.

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past 3 years, you’ll know that job hunting is tough. In fact, in general the world of employment is rocky and is something that has affected people massively over the past couple of years. With people being made redundant, companies cutting back on new intake and less opportunities being made available, people are stuck.  This has resulted in massive numbers of people applying for vacancies when they do become available – which means that the recruitment process is tougher than ever! There are loads of places you can get interview hints and tips, so there is no need to go into one unprepared. One of the best pieces of advice that can be given to you about interviews is to make sure that you are organized and prepared. Don’t assume you can just read up on the company the night before – this will just leave you feeling stressed and anxious, which is not the best approach for a job interview.

 

Read up about the company before you go and write down a couple of questions that you would like to ask them. This could be to do with the company, its growth, its plans or even specific to the job role you are applying for. It is important that you show an interest, so asking questions is essential.

 

You also need to think about what they are likely to ask you – prepare answers for questions about your strengths, weaknesses and experience. You’ll usually be allowed to take interview notes in with you so have buzz words written down to remind you of your answers. Interviewers will generally allow for nerves but you still need to come across as confident as you can.

 

Remember, as well as assessing your suitability for the job role they’re also looking at how you are going to fit in with a team. They want someone that is out-going, friendly and confident so that they don’t have to worry about how you are going to fit in with the people you are working with. Even if you’re shaking on the inside, try and project positivity and confidence as much as possible.

End the interview on a high note so that you feel positive. Ask them when you’re likely to hear from them and encourage them to contact you should they have any more questions that they want to ask you.

 

Remember, just because you have had a good interview that doesn’t mean you should give up looking. If you miss a couple of day’s job hunting, you could miss out on your dream job. Instead, keep at it and carry on applying for jobs until you land your dream job role!

Avoid scams by following these tips.

 

 

Use common sense.  Assess!  Consider the logic of an opportunity from the other side.  Think about this, if they are paying you so much for so little work, how would the promoters of the opportunity make money?  Moreover if a company’s marketing tactic is mainly based on coming out legitimate, that is probably because it is tendering a work at home scam…or at the very least a poor money-making opportunity.  So remember this, any job that promotes itself in search engine ads as a “legitimate work at home job” almost certainly not legit.

 

 

Do your homework. Sending money to any organization without thoroughly checking it out is most certainly wrong!  Always remember that legitimate companies do not charge job applicants and that business opportunities are never risk-free

 

 

Know how to spot the work at home scam. One very complicated trick is a scam technique that sets up a whole website dedicated to revealing work at home scams and then funnel people to the few “legitimate” work at home jobs which those are not legitimate of course.

 

 

Know the typical work at home scams. Scammers are always developing new schemes, and work-at-home scammers are no different.  Below are some that you must avoid.

ü  Direct Sales or multilevel marketing (MLM)

ü  Pyramid Schemes - Always avoid!

ü  Business start-up kits

ü  Anything involving cashing checks/wiring money – Always avoid!

ü  Home assembly/envelope stuffing – Always avoid!

ü  Becoming a product re-seller or wholesaler

ü  Stock trading systems – Always avoid!

ü  Directories of telecommuting jobs or businesses

ü  Taking online surveys

ü  Mystery shopping

ü  Data entry/call centers (Some are legit but, the lure of these jobs is used to sell bogus start-up kits and other scams.)

 

 

Avoid job opportunities found on advertising on search engines and many websites.  Remember that legit companies are looking for legit work home jobs and just like any other employer, are looking for qualified, reliable people to do the work.  Screening applicants is a time-consuming procedure so therefore those casting a wide net by using Google or search engine ads may not be legitimate.

 

 

Don’t pay for opportunities. Employers don’t charge employees to work for them, you have got to remember that!  And those scams posing as “legitimate business opportunities” will ask for money.  Businesses are expected to have start-up costs nonetheless true businesses are normally not simple exchanges of unskilled labor for payment, as in home assembly and envelope-stuffing schemes.

 

 

Report scams. Report immediately if you suspect that you have been scammed.  If you’ve given out financial information contact your bank at once.  And report it to your state’s attorney general or any number of other authorities.
